Foundation fans are still reeling from the shocking season 2 finale, leading to them hoping for a third season on Apple TV. However, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are currently causing Apple TV and Skydance Studios to hold back on officially renewing for a third season. Despite this, showrunner David S. Goyer has excited fans by teasing that there will be ever-crazier moments after the jaw-dropping season 2 finale.
Showrunner teases season 3 of Isaac Asimov Foundation novels
Despite the fact that the strikes are holding things back, Foundation showrunner David S. Gower is optimistic about a third season. He even went so far as to hint at Demerzel’s long history in season 3 and more, if the demand is there.
The series is adapted from iconic author Isaac Asimov’s Foundation novels and stars Jared Harris as Hari Seldon and Lee Pace as Day. Another leading role is played by Zimbabwean/Spanish actress, Lou Llobell as Gaal Dornick. As an interesting note, Harris is the second son of iconic actor Richard Harris and his first wife, Elizabeth Rees-Williams.
Meanwhile, season 2 came to a close with plenty of twists, including some shocking deaths, already teasing season 3.
‘It’s bonkers’
Goyer spoke about the popular sci-fi series in an interview with The Wrap. He explained the choices made throughout the series, including destroying planets and killing off popular characters. He even addressed some of the fans’ questions, acknowledging the reaction from fans about the show’s future, as follows:
It’s bonkers what happens in Season 3. I remember reading online last week people’s reactions to 209 going, “Oh my God, how can the show survive” and then thinking oh there are so many more things that happen in the next episode, and then there’s even crazier things that happen in Season 3. I’m really excited.
I hope to get the word on Season 3 as soon as the strike is over. I will also do a little plug which is on my website, I’ve been releasing show notes and behind-the-scenes pics, and then I’ve reluctantly joined Instagram and hopefully as we wait for a Season 3 pickup I’ll be trickling out various behind the scenes videos and stills.
You know, Apple and Skydance are extremely happy with our Season 2 performance that the audience has unquestionably built. I just think the feeling is that in deference to the twin strikes that are happening now, it would be bad form to do something like that. But I’m very optimistic.
Meanwhile, with six novels in the Asimov Foundation book series, this gives the Apple TV series plenty of content to adapt in season 3 and beyond.
For now, fans have to play a waiting game until Apple TV finally confirms the third season, once the strikes are over and done, hopefully with a good resolution.
