Drew Barrymore Receives Backlash From Writers Guild of America

The star of “Riding In Cars With Boys” Drew Barrymore is currently under fire following her announcement on the 4th installment of her daytime talk show “The Drew Barrymore Show.”

The show wrapped up its season three in April 2023 but a few weeks later, in May 2023, the Writers Guild of America went on strike, two months later in July 2023, SAG-AFTRA joined the strike.

With the ongoing strike, it was assumed that the actress would put a stop to further/ upcoming productions of her talk show until further notice or at least until after the reason for the strike was resolved.

This assumption was taken after Drew stepped down as host of the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards in May. However, that seems to not be the case as Drew shared that her eponymous daytime talk show will be coming back for season four on Monday, Sept. 18.

Drew Barrymore — WAG Is Against Drew’s Talk Show Return

On September 10, the “Wedding Singer” actress wrote a lengthy Instagram post that referred to her decision to relinquish the position of a host of the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards that her talk show will be in “compliance with not discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind.”

The “Bad Girls” actress began her writeup with, “I made a choice to walk away from the MTV, film and television awards because I was the host and it had a direct conflict with what the strike was dealing with which was studios, streamers, film, and television.” She added, “It was also in the first week of the strike and so I did what I thought was the appropriate thing at the time to stand in solidarity with the writers.”

She continued, “And to be clear, our talk show actually wrapped on April 20th so we never had to shut down the show. However, I am also making the choice to come back for the first time in this strike for our show, that may have my name on it but this is bigger than just me.”

She further said, “I own this choice. We are in compliance with not discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind. We launched live in a global pandemic. Our show was built for sensitive times and has only functioned through what the real world is going through in real time.”

She concluded her writeup with, “I want to be there to provide what writers do so well, which is a way to bring us together or help us make sense of the human experience. I hope for a resolve for everyone as soon as possible. We have navigated difficult times since we first came on air. And so I take a step forward to start season 4 once again with an astute humility.”

However, it might have been that the actress forgot that her talk show is covered by WGA hence her decision to go ahead and air it but the Writers Guild of America made her aware of that fact and made her aware that they’re against it.

In a separate tweet on X formerly known as Twitter, the Writers Guild of America tweeted “The @DrewBarrymoreTV Show is a WGA covered, struck show that is planning to return without its writers. The Guild has, and will continue to, picket struck shows that are in production during the strike. Any writing on “The Drew Barrymore Show” is in violation of WGA strike rules.”
