Dolly Parton Covers Classic Hit “What’s Up?” With 4 Non Blonde’s Linda Perry

Dolly Parton loves everything about Linda Perry and the songs she wrote. So much so that she teamed up with the 4 Non Blonde’s member for a remix of their signature hit. Bring on the nostalgia.

Dolly Parton And Linda Perry Harmonize In New Video Promoting Their “What’s Up” Remix

Who knew that 2023 could gift us with a Dolly Parton and Linda Perry combo? I mean, sick right?

“First of all, I love Linda Perry. Second of all, I love this song written by Linda,” Parton said in a press release for the cover song, which arrives on the heels of a new music video that sees the pair harmonizing while Perry, 58, plays the guitar.

The remix of the 1993 hit, “What’s Up,” will appear on Parton’s upcoming Rockstar album, which is like a cultural shift for Parton and fans, as it will be her first rock album.

“Third of all, I love being a part of this video to try to make people think about what’s going on in this world today,” continued Parton’s statement. “Shout out to the little children that helped with the video! If our children don’t make it, then what will? Again, I ask ‘What’s Up?’ Enjoy.”

Along the way, children discover the room they’re singing in and run in to experience their beautiful performance in real-time.

There’s a reason why “What’s Up?” is a classic, and its lyrics attest to that. “All of these years and my life is still/Just tryin’ to get up that great big hill of hope/For a destination,” Parton sings. For some reason, listening to this song made me think of Parton’s line in Bebe Rexha’s song, “Seasons,” where she sings, “My mirror is a liar/Inside I’m still a child/Who’s tryin’ to find her way back home.”

“What’s Up?” is especially relatable for its message of trying to find meaning to existence, which is a question I believe we all, in our own way and time, ask ourselves. “And so I wake up in the mornin’ and I step outside/And I take a deep breath and I get real high/And I scream at the top of my lungs, “What’s goin’ on?”

Writing in a press release, Perry gushed about the new collaboration with Parton, writing, “How is one supposed to react when the greatest and most prolific songwriter in the world wants to cover a song YOU wrote? Her version of ‘What’s Up?’ is so good. Her spin on it made me feel like it was her song. No surprise there.”
