Leo tackles his new job as Salem Spectator gossip columnist with a vengeance, because he knows there’s always a lot of dirty laundry to dig up-gossip can rarely be proven. The very essence of gossip is hearing this about that one who heard it from another one and it sounds true, so it could be. By the time the original person gets it to the last person who’s usually Leo’s source, the stories and players change a thousand times, and the nosy Nellies are abundant.
Leo finds a story about a very prominent citizen that can neither be proven nor denied, and it’s something very, very juicy and salacious. He should probably know better than dig up old dirty laundry of Julie Williams’ (Susan Seaforth Hayes) but he publishes it anyway.
Doug Williams’ (Bill Hayes) beginnings as a con man named Brent Douglas who was in a cell with Bill Horton (at that time Edward Mallory) are pretty well known. But Julie Williams’ shoplifting a mink from a department store and being arrested for it is a little known secret in the modern day. Her grandparents Tom and Alice Horton (MacDonald Carey, Frances Reid) raised her after her parents moved to Europe, Addie Horton (Patricia Barry) her mother later returning a widow.
Addie stole Doug from Julie and married him on the night Julie was supposed to initially, dying of leukemia when Hope Brady (Kristian Alfonso) was nine days old. Leo is excited about Julie’s whole life being a scandal, but decides to add some salacious details of his own to fill in the word count necessary to be published.
It’s not the true parts of Julie’s biography that cause the offense, it’s the details added by Leo to make up his required word count that get him in trouble. But since Leo is covered by the paper’s insurance and his own disclaimer, he cannot be sued directly for his false details. So the Salem Spectator is sued for salacious slander and Sloan’s the only attorney gutsy enough to take the case.
Doug doesn’t like his wife’s reputation slandered and Julie likes it even less. They write a rebuttal but Leo stands behind what he “heard” and Sloan defends the paper-that’s only the first of the problems Leo will create with his creativity!
