Today Shannon broke the news of her daughter’s death on Instagram: “With the breaking heart, we are announcing that @annamarie35 is no longer with us. She passed away in my home last night peacefully at 11:12 PM.”
Shannon added that Cardwell “gave one hell of a fight for 10 months she passed away with her family around her like she won’t and we will be updating y’all with more information as we get it today. We love y’all and continued prayers and thoughts for our family doing this difficult time.”
Cardwell starred with Shannon and her sister Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson in TLC’s Toddlers & Tiaras and Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. She was diagnosed with stage 4 adrenal carcinoma in January.
On Instagram on Friday Shannon asked her followers to keep her family in their thoughts: “Y’all we r asking for prayers for our family as we are going through this process we really appreciate y’all for all the thoughts and prayers and we will update y’all whenever we can just know that all of your thoughts and your prayers are very much appreciated during this time” and Shannon added the hashtag “#CancerSucks.”
Shannon’s message was reposted the same day by her 23-year-old daughter, Lauryn “Pumpkin” Efird, with the added message “Say a prayer for our family.”
After Cardwell experienced unexplained abdominal pain, tests revealed cancer in her lung, liver and kidney. According to People, she underwent her first round of chemotherapy in March.
On May 10 she shared in an Instagram post, together with a picture of her and boyfriend Eldridge Toney that she was on her third round of chemo: “This [was] yesterday. It was pretty good day but did get a little and Cracker Barrel was good going down but not up 😂 but over all it’s going good and chemo is working we come to find so things are looking good.”
That month Shannon told People “I don’t go live [on TikTok] a lot because of Anna. I’m already emotionally drained because of that. I’m not being mean with the emotion… I’m not mentally [or] emotionally prepared to deal with 5,000 people asking me about Anna that day.”
She added that she and her husband, Justin Stroud, were relocating to Georgia to be by her daughter’s side as she underwent treatment.
Cardwell and Shannon’s past difficulties were well documented with the former going to live with her grandmother in 2003.
She returned home in 2012 when the family’s TLC reality show premiered. That show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, was cancelled “in 2014 amid reports that Shannon was romantically involved with former boyfriend and convicted sex offender Mark McDaniel.”
Cardwell later told People “Me and Mama realized we needed to put this behind us and get our relationship back on track and that’s what we did and that’s what we have been doing,” she explained.
The pair’s ups and downs were chronicled in the news they reunited this year when Shannon married Stroud in February 2023.
Cardwell is survived by her daughters Kaitlyn Elizabeth, born in 2012, and Kylee Madison, born in 2015.
