Previous episodes of Y & R revealed Jack feels used after he overheard an argument between Phyllis and Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters) in which Phyllis admitted she was marking her territory! Jack and Phyllis had decided that they should only be friends in spite of the growing and reignited attraction between the two of them, and then Diane came back! Jack has found a very suspicious cause-and-effect in the timing between Diane showing up and Phyllis deciding they should move quickly forward in their relationships!
When he hears Phyllis’ very telling argument to Diane, and especially after they’ve just come from making love in a hotel suite, he feels used! Longtime viewers will remember Phyllis and Diane’s intensely fierce romantic rivalry over Jack, and how one-upmanship – or, should that be “one-upwomanship” was the rule of the day!
Phyllis comes to the Abbott mansion in an effort to explain to Jack what he had overheard, and to assure him she was not just using him to one-up Diane. Jack, however, is in a pout and hardly receptive to her explanations which he interprets as excuses, trying to convince him that Diane’s arrival did spur her emotions for Jack. Jack thinks she’s trying to over-explain her motives and that makes him even more convinced that his theory is correct and that makes him feel even more uncomfortable about it. Phyllis then apologizes for her comments to Diane but then makes things even worse when she shifts the blame to her; that really makes Jack mad!
Phyllis continues to plead her case to Jack for staying together, but she feels like she’s beating her head on a brick wall and he’s just not budging! Jack is really hurt over this because once again he’d opened his heart to Phyllis, and they had spent many months getting past old hurts and learning to trust. Trust had to be rebuilt not only with each other but in themselves to make it as a couple, and he feels like it’s all been torn down.
Jack had previously been rather shocked at how well every step of this process had gone up until now. He had felt that there had been a very real payoff for taking things so slow, but he’s no longer sure.
Jack is disappointed – Diane is impressing him more than Phyllis, she’s being a terrific grandmother, not pushing buttons or intentionally making people uncomfortable. Phyllis promises she’ll do better and disprove his theories and prove she does love him and wants to be with him. But it may be too late – Jack feels that Phyllis has broken his trust and with Jack, it takes a very long time to learn to trust again. Unfortunately for Phyllis, things between herself and Jack will only continue to deteriorate from here on out! He seems to be fresh out of second chances – or thirds or fourths!
