So far, we know Jensen Ackles is reprising his role as Dean Winchester, but who else will return in The CW’s new series The Winchesters?
The CW has recently released teaser trailers for the Supernatural prequel, The Winchesters. In the trailer included below, we see Dean Winchester, leaning against the brothers’ iconic 1967 Chevrolet Impala. Now, fans want to know which other Supernatural stars will feature in the story of Sam and Dean Winchester’s parents. Read on to find out what we know so far.
The new, upcoming The CW series will explore the history of Dean and Sam Winchester’s parents and how they fell in love. In the first trailer for the “epic love story,” we immediately spot Jensen Ackles, who plays Dean Winchester, leaning against the door of the iconic 1967 Chevrolet Impala. Does this mean he is starring in the prequel? No. In fact, Ackles will play the role of the narrator of the prequel series, The Winchesters.
Premiering in October on The CW, it turns out Dean is not only narrating the series. He is reportedly also playing a role in the production of the series which is set long before Supernatural.
Regrettably, only Jensen Ackles will appear in The Winchesters, albeit in a narration role. It turns out that when the announcement was made about The Winchesters last summer, Ackles, and his former Supernatural co-star Jared Padalecki, had recently had a fall-out.
As noted by TV Insider, Jared, who played Sam in the original show, only found out that the series was coming via social media announcements (how rude!). While the pair have since made up, Padalecki has no involvement in the series at all.
Meanwhile, Sam and Dean’s parents, John and Mary Winchester are played by Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly. Supernatural fans will recall that the Winchesters were played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead) and Samantha Smith (The Devil’s Dolls) in the original series.
After running for 15 seasons, Supernatural finally came to an end in 2020. There have been a few hints of a reboot coming in the future, but for now, fans can look forward to finding out more about Sam and Dean’s parents.
Meanwhile, The Winchesters is written by the original Supernatural script writer, Robbie Thompson. On top of this, the series is produced by Jensen and Daneel Ackles through their production company, Chaos Machine Productions.
As with many long-running series, when the final episode airs, there is always a question of whether it should be left alone, or expanded in new ways. While the 15 seasons of Supernatural were wildly successful, it is probably time to call it a day.
Hopefully, the new prequel series, The Winchesters will draw as much attention as Supernatural and end up in a multi-season run. Meanwhile, the first episode airs on The CW on October 11, 2022. Anyone who feels a need for a catch-up on the 15 seasons of Supernatural can binge the 327 episodes on Netflix.
