What It Means To Be Called A Diva: Meghan Markle And Mariah Carey Discuss

In the second episode of Archetypes, Meghan Markle sat down with global superstar Mariah Carey to discuss what it’s like to be called a diva.

We know that Mariah Carey can climb notes as if they’re pudding, but the one thing that the beautiful American singer has been associated with for a long time is high maintenance. And hey, Mariah knows it’s not a bad thing for one to be, as they say, high maintenance.

In the Duchess’ new podcast, Archetypes, she and Mariah Carey chatted about “the duality of diva”.

Mariah Carey – On Coming To Terms With The Word “Diva”

On the latest Archetypes episode, which obviously covered the term diva, Mariah Carey admitted that she has fully embraced the word, even though Meghan appears to still be on the fence about it.

When the 41-year-old asked Mariah how she feels about being associated with the word diva and whether she thinks the word is a compliment or an insult, Mariah readily answered that she considers it to be both.

“I think it’s both,” she said. “For me, I think it’s both. I do, because I mean, I know the origin of the word.” Mariah recalled that her mother – who is an opera singer, would use the word when describing a female friend of hers, even though, at the time, young Carey was confused about the meaning of the word.

“It’s very much the grandeur of it all, is what I envisioned,” Carey recalled. “Glamorized and fabulous and whatever. And then as things evolved, the past 20 years — I don’t know numbers — the diva, they mean you’re a successful woman, usually. But also, and forgive me if we’re not allowed to say the B-word, but a B-I-T-C-H. Like, it’s not okay for you to be a boss. It’s not okay for you to be a strong woman, you know what I mean?”

At another time during the podcast, Mariah called Meghan out for trying to dissociate herself with the term “diva” by saying that she doesn’t necessarily “connect” to it.
