The Princess Royal Opens Helipad For Manchester Infirmary

On March 2, Princess Anne officially opened Manchester Royal infirmary’s new helipad.The helipad will allow the air ambulance to land right in the city center, making it possible for patients to receive life-saving care within minutes. Located on Oxford road, it will be used by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

Her Royal Highness unveiled the new helipad at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust on Oxford Road.
The helipad is the first of its kind located in the North West. It will enable critically ill patients to be airlifted straight to the Trust’s hospitals in Manchester city center, thereby saving time and lives in the process. Since opening in 2021, the Air Ambulance has been used over 70 times to date.The helipad allows patients to be seen within minutes by trauma specialists, thus saving many lives in the long run.

According to Kathy Cowell, the Chairman of MFT, “The helipad has made a tremendous difference to how quickly our trauma teams can respond to emergencies which can be the difference between life and death.”

She also extended her gratitude to “everyone who helped with our fundraising appeal”, commending them for “their hard work”.The development of the helipad was made possible by a fundraising campaign called “Time Saves Lives”. The campaign saw organizations and individuals come together to raise the required funding in just 12 months.

Princess Anne Visits St. Mary’s Hospital in Manchester

St. Mary’s is home to the biggest maternity services in the U.K, employing over 800 mid-wives. There Anne met and talked with the staff and heard about their work delivering “16,500 babies a year”. This earned them Royal College of Midwives Service of the Year Award 2021.

She also chatted with maternity support workers, doctors and families at the hospital with their newborns. The Princess Royal is Patron of The Royal College of Midwives which represents all midwives and works to achieve excellence, innovation and leadership in the sector.
