Meri, 51, has been in a plural marriage with Kody, 53, for 20 years with sister wives Janelle and Robyn Brown, with a fourth wife, Christine, having departed the relationship last year. Notably, only about 2 percent of the global population participates in plural marriages and, according to Newsweek, for the vast majority of those countries, that number is as low as 0.5 percent.

Entertainment Tonight reports that, as Kody Brown’s first wife, Meri has been a fixture in the Brown family since 1990. The two share one child together, daughter Mariah Brown, 26.

Sister Wives Spoilers – More Than A Decade Without Intimacy

Their relationship was reportedly strong until Meri got caught up in a catfishing scandal back in 2015, and yet Meri stayed, and Kody acquiesced. However, after the season 17 premiere episode of Sister Wives, fans are now questioning why Meri has stayed with him all these years.

While Kody and Meri reportedly remain “spiritually” married, the union is no longer legal. Fans may recall that Kody divorced his first wife Meri so her could then wed his then-fourth wife Robyn, 43, in 2014 adopting her youngsters from a previous marriage.

Meri and Kody have been open about the more than a decade-long lack of intimacy between them and, despite their issues, the two remain together, living in Flagstaff, Arizona with the rest of the Brown family – Robyn, Janelle, and their children. Christine, after splitting from the polygamist union, returned to Utah.

Redditor probzhyperboleIf opened a discussion about the reality TV star, posting a comment about the Brown patriarch that read, “If Kody is this much of a raging narcissist in his self-recorded footage, can you imagine how nasty he must be in private? I can only imagine what Christine and Meri have been through.”

He added that he always thought Meri hung around as a sort of a slap in Kody’s face but writes that he’s no longer so sure, “I’m guessing she believed some of the bulls–t he threw at her like his ‘grown ups stay’ line with Christine.”

Emptyhellebore then remarked that “Meri has always looked like she was shamed into thinking she was a terrible person who had to stay from my perspective. What I’ve seen from last season and this first episode of this season has not changed my mind.”

“I think Meri 100% believed what he was telling her and don’t forget, the whole family sorta jumped on that train. Meri lost all credibility and dignity after the whole catfish debacle. She may have done a lot to herself but to me, she seemed to be a broken person who lacked the resiliency to climb out intact,” Betts78 chimed in.
