The British television personality received more than 6,000 complaints after he wrote that he wanted to see the Duchess of Sussex being “paraded naked through the streets.” Here’s what you need to know.

Many critics in the UK believe that Clarkson went too far in his description of Meghan Markle in his column for The Sun. In it, he writes, “We all know in our heart of hearts that Harold Markle is a slightly dim but fun-loving chin who flew Apache helicopter gunships in Afghanistan and cavorted around Las Vegas hotel rooms with naked hookers. But then along came Meghan, who obviously used some vivid bedroom promises to turn him into a warrior of woke.”

He then goes on to say, “At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her. Everyone who’s my age thinks the same way.”

After receiving thousands of complaints, the ex-Top Gear host now says that he’s sorry for his words. He wrote on Twitter, “Oh dear. I’ve rather put my foot in it. In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people. I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future.”

Many of his critics commented on his post with, “No this isn’t clumsy, it is dangerous. You have millions of followers, it takes one person to read what you write as a call to action and the worst could happen, furthermore is the comparison to Rose West clumsy? Or more in the realm of normality for you?” along with, “Not clumsy, this was deliberate. Shame on you, your disgusting references to Meghan Markle are unforgivable and demonstrate everything wrong in our society. Someone in your position should set a decent moral example, trolling women and inciting hatred is utterly vile.”
