According to The Sun, though Andrew managed to dodge the proverbial bullet by settling with Virginia Guiffre, he may be staring down the barrel of more guns in the US including a woman who claims the Duke of York groped her. Continue reading and we’ll fill you in on the details.
The 62-year-old royal settle the sexual assault case leveled at him by Virginia Roberts Guiffre, 38, for an undisclosed amount that is rumored to be as much as $15 million. The case with Virginia Guiffre was made possible by a New York law that gave victims of child sexual assault the ability to sue their attackers in civil court, regardless of the statute of limitations.
One of Andrew’s potential lawsuits that we know about, involves 42-year-old Florida hair salon owner Johanna Sjoberg who has claimed numerous times that the prince groped her breasts when she was 21, in 2001. To this point, she has been unable to sue the duke as her situation had not involved child sexual assault and the statute of limitations has already run out for her.
A new bill in New York that may be signed into law as early as this year would also allow one year for victims of adult sexual assault to bring their allegations to civil court without regard to the statute of limitations. According to The Sun, Gloria Alred an attorney who has represented victims of the law financier and convicted sex trafficker, Jeffrey Epstein, said “In New York, there is an effort to change the statute of limitations for adult victims of adult sexual abuse. “
She further explained that “the effort is to essentially model it on the Child Victims Act to provide a year during which an adult victim of adult sexual abuse could sue.”
“I do not know any other person who might allege that she was wrongfully sexually abused by Prince Andrew, but if there are such people, then they would need the new law.”
Though it is currently stalled in the New York Assembly, New York’s Adults Survivors Act was approved unanimously by the New York Senate in June last year but has so far stalled in the Assembly. The bill, however, could pass as early as June 2022.
About the bill, Senator Brad Hoylman, who sponsored the bill, had this to say, “Adult survivors of serial sexual assaulters like Jeffrey Epstein have been shut out of our courthouses. That ends now.” We don’t know about Andrew’s probable future litigation, but we can assume that, if he’s assaulted others, they will be coming forward.
