After The CW gets new owners, it seems unlikely that The Winchesters and Walker: Independence will get a second season.
The Supernatural prequel series The Winchesters recently premiered on The CW, but apparently, it is unlikely to get a second season. Meanwhile, the same applies to The CW show, Walker: Independence as the network continues its cutbacks. Read on to find out what happened to these potentially popular series.
The Supernatural prequel, The Winchesters, premiered on The CW on October 11, 2022. Prior to this, Walker: Independence premiered on October 6, 2022. Any fans of either series will be disappointed to hear that The CW is continuing cutbacks and neither series has back orders. Meanwhile, this potentially reveals that neither series will head for a season 2.
The CW recently changed owners and Nexstar is faced with their first decisions regarding ordering more of the network’s existing scripted series. Part of this move affects both The CW’s new series, Walker: Independence from CBS Studios and also The Winchesters from Warner Bros. Television.
While both series will feature their original 13 episodes it is unlikely there will be more. Meanwhile, the network’s head, Dennis Miller, has stressed to producers and talent that no decisions have been made about a second season for either show. In fact, he did indicate that the lack of back orders doesn’t necessarily mean cancellations.
However, this clearly underlines Nexstar’s cost-cutting drive. Meanwhile, it also shows it is moving toward more unscripted and cheaper scripted programming.
Currently, four scripted series on The CW are ending with the current season. In fact, this includes The Flash, Riverdale, Nancy Drew and Stargirl. Moreover, the list is expected to grow as the season progresses.
On top of the programming, The CW has reportedly undergone a round of layoffs this week which is never a good sign..
Despite the fact that no renewals are currently planned for The Winchesters and Walker: Independence, Deadline reports that both have done well in terms of The CW rating standards. Meanwhile, both are new chapters in top-rated CW franchises. Under normal circumstances, more seasons for both shows would have been the norm.
