When Willow was recently brought into GH after fainting at the Metro Court Pool, TJ did a battery of tests to find out what was causing the problem. That had been at least the second time that she had fainted, the first time having been found on the floor on her shift. Willow has been in nursing school which has sometimes odd shifts like a real nurse does, and taking care of Wiley Corinthos (Viron Weaver) and she blamed it on not eating.
Willow was thrilled to hear that she was pregnant, but TJ cautioned her there were other tests he’d had ordered and performed that had not yet come in. Now he has called her, and Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) in to tell them what the other tests say.
TJ tells Willow and Michael that the testing showed some genetic markers for conditions in Willow that could be passed on to the baby. Michael is familiar with that, he has a genetic heart condition that was passed on to Wiley, and TJ tells him they won’t know until this baby is born.
But as for Willow, there are some very worrying results that could pose a danger for both her and the baby – one of her kidneys is compromised! Michael unfortunately is familiar with that situation as well – Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy) needed a kidney transplant as a child; she’s got one of Nelle Benson’s (Chloe Lanier) kidneys. Kidney problems can be very dangerous the way it is, but for a pregnant woman, it can prove to be deadly!
Willow and Michael naturally are upset and worried, and they ask TJ what are the options for Willow and their baby? Willow isn’t very far along and an amniocentesis is not yet possible, the fetus is too small and there isn’t enough fluid. TJ is a relatively new doctor and of course he will call in kidney specialists and they already have excellent obstetricians there to consult.
Right now, the main focus will be Willow and her health – if she’s not healthy, the baby won’t be either and the two conditions could certainly cause problems! The kidney malfunctions could cause the baby problems as well as Willow, and the pregnancy could complicate the kidney situation!
TJ says when one doesn’t know their birth parents or their medical history it can complicate treatment for genetic conditions, and sometimes diagnosis as well. Willow had decided not to look for her birth parents but now she has to reconsider if maybe she should. Even if they are deceased, knowing what they died from could be helpful if it was from a disease and not an accident. And what if the baby would need a transfusion or something and Michael or Willow’s blood didn’t match; they wouldn’t know what to do if it were a rare blood type! They reconsider and decide maybe they’d better start trying to find her birth parents just in case!
