When Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) first came back to Port Charles, it was on the heels of regaining his memory and realizing Nina knew who he was all along and betrayed him just to keep him from his family and all to herself. When Sonny came home, he did so with every intention of making his marriage to Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) work. But he wasn’t the same man that left town on Christmas Eve the year prior. Sonny came home with a whole lot of ‘Mike’ in him, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it wasn’t the man Carly fell in love with.
As time progressed, everyone found out Sonny was still keeping some of the truth from them in order to protect Nina. He eventually went on to defend Nina during a court hearing between her and Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen) and Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) that brought into question whether Nina was a stable person to have in their son’s life. When Sonny testified on Nina’s behalf, Michael felt it was the ultimate betrayal and has yet to forgive him.
Of course, Sonny also cheated on Carly with Nina, if we’re calling a spade a spade. Allegedly heartbroken and thinking Carly was not going to meet him halfway to work on their marriage, he promptly jumped into bed with Nina just in time for Carly to walk in on them. To say the whole family is upset with Sonny would be an understatement, and Josslyn ‘Joss’ Jacks (Eden McCoy) obviously isn’t speaking to Sonny either.
When Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) was still with us, he wasn’t a fan of Nina’s, even though his heart longed to have Carly to himself. We don’t really see Sonny’s other business associates come around as much when Nina is in the room. She’s not on the inner circle the way Carly was, and we certainly don’t see Brick (Stephen A. Smith) or other associates discuss potential business anywhere in Nina’s orbit. It’s as though Sonny’s crime organization is another facet of who he is that he doesn’t share with Nina. Diane Miller (Carolyn Hennesy) also hasn’t much enthusiasm for Nina, and clearly railed against her during the trial regarding Wiley.
Nina’s aunt, Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati) just wants her dear niece to be happy, and if that’s with Sonny, so be it. Still, she’s expressed concern for the way Nina managed the onset of her relationship with Sonny. Maxie loves Sonny, and she loves Nina, but we haven’t seen her express love for them as a couple. In fact, the only person who really seemed to support both of them and their union was Brando Corbin (Johnny Wactor), and he’s dead. Sasha Gilmore Corbin (Sofia Mattsson) might continue to do so in his absence, but Nina is so consumed with Sonny that her relationship with Sasha has taken more of a back seat.
