When Elizabeth first agreed to help Nikolas with his baby mama situation, he wasn’t sure how everything was going to work out, but he knew he couldn’t let anyone find out about Esme being back in Port Charles, alive, and most certainly not that she was pregnant. He knew his marriage would meet its demise if Ava Jerome Cassadine (Maura West) came to know any of this. However, he bolstered his argument for keeping Esme locked up by telling Elizabeth that Esme was The Hook. This instilled a sense of public duty in both Nik and Liz that let them lie to themselves about why they weren’t handing Esme over to the police. Of course, Liz doesn’t know all of Nik’s reasons for keeping Esme within reach.
While Nikolas may not have actually been responsible for Esme’s fall off the parapet, Ava was. In an effort to protect his soon-to-be-ex-wife, the last thing he needed was for Esme to tell the police what happened before she seemed to go dark. Furthermore, Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaugnessy) still has the confession letter Nik gave to Ava as her get out of jail free card in hopes she would see how far he was willing to go to get her back. He’s got a lot riding on Esme keeping her mouth shut, which means he has to give her at least some of what she wants — her freedom. She would prefer it right now, but she will have to settle for after the baby is born so Nikolas can rest assured she won’t disappear with his child. Nonetheless, both he and Liz have felt emboldened by keeping The Hook locked up tight.
Elizabeth has just tended to Rory Cabrera’s (Michael Blake Kruse) wounds after he was attacked by The Hook during a routine police call he somehow managed to step into before the call arrived. If he survives the ordeal, he’s going to have some explaining to do about how he managed to get there before Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) even knew there was an issue. However, it’s looking like Rory isn’t going to make it — even if he silently exits off-screen to do some of Victor’s bidding. When Elizabeth breaks the news to Nikolas that someone else is out their wielding a hook at unsuspecting residents of Port Chuck, he’s going to be taken aback and find it difficult to believe — especially after The Hook came after him at the same time that Esme had broken free from the tower. Elizabeth isn’t going to feel so hot about keeping Esme as a prisoner when she realizes she isn’t a threat to anyone’s physical safety. Will Nik be able to coax her into staying on board when he reminds her of what Esme did to her son, Cameron ‘Cam’ Webber (William Lipton)? Stay tuned for more GH news and spoilers just ahead.
