Knowing he not only went behind her back to have Spinelli run the Society setups algorithm on her and Austin, but that Austin blackmailed Spinelli to make him do it just tears into Maxie in a way that makes her so uncomfortable with the man she suspects Austin might actually be. Why can’t she seem to stop picking these liars?
As Maxie mulls over what she wants her future to look like, she finds she’s already fairly certain of a few key people she knows will be in it — her mom, Felicia Scorpio (Kristina Wagner), Mac Scorpio (John J. York), and Damian Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) remain constants for her. Austin came into Maxie’s life at a time when she was really fragile, and what began as friends blossomed into something more. The beginning was light and easy, but the more Maxie gets to know Austin, the less she feels like she knows him at all. She was supposed to have learned this lesson already with Peter August (Wes Ramsey) and doesn’t have any interest in doing it over again.
While Spinelli has been longing for the day that Maxie would tell him she’s done with Austin, the end of their relationship didn’t exactly pan out the way he had hoped it would. Maxie is bummed, but not heartbroken. That’s a good sign she wasn’t very invested in Austin to begin with. At this point in their relationship, she should have been feeling more for him than she was, and she knows that. However, her relationship with Spinelli has spanned many more years, and she’s far too hurt by his compliance with Austin’s blackmail attempt to feel friendly toward Spinelli right now — much less anything more than that.
Most of the time, Maxie keeps her problems to herself. When she does need someone to confide in, Lulu Falconeri (Emme Rylan) was her go-to gal pal for years, but she’s in a coma right now. In some circumstances, Maxie has been able to run to Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) for advice, but in this case she’s going to find out Sam knew what was going on with Spinelli buying Society Setups, and she didn’t tell her. Furthermore, her sister-in-law Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud) is clearly out of touch with everyone right now as she battles her own problems, but she’s also suddenly Austin’s number-one fan. Maxie obviously can’t turn to Spinelli to share her devastation, so she might continue to open up to the stepbrother she doesn’t know she has — Cody Bell (Josh Kelly). This is going to give Spinelli serious concern that Maxie might be moving on with Cody, but just the opposite — he might encourage her to give Spin another chance.
