Longtime General Hospital viewers will remember the rift that occurred between Michael and Sonny when Sonny was tricked into killing AJ Quartermaine (Sean Kanan) for the death of his fiancée Kate Howard (Kelly Sullivan)! General Hospital viewers will recall that AJ, of course, was Michael’s birth father and the half-brother of Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) and Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison). Kate had been shot by Ava Jerome (Maura West), now Ava Cassadine in an effort to keep Julian Jerome’s (William DeVry) true identity a secret, and she had scrawled “AJ” in her blood after she was shot.
This was shortly after Jason had been presumed dead the first time and AJ had been revealed as alive after Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson) helped him fake his death. Michael changed his name to Quartermaine and wouldn’t forgive Sonny, and he and Kiki Jerome (Hayley Erin) took over the care of baby Avery Jerome-Corinthos (Ava and Grace Scarola) and kept Sonny from her!
General Hospital viewers will recall that it took years for the rift to be repaired and Michael to finally agree to reconcile with Sonny after AJ was killed – and that after the truth came out. Michael then took back the name of Corinthos, which he was given after Sonny formally adopted him as his son as a little boy, the first time Sonny and Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) had married.
But as General Hospital viewers can imagine, that reconciliation wasn’t the most solid because if it had been, another and much more serious rift would not have formed this time between father and son. The crux of the matter this time that is causing the rift between Michael and Sonny is that Sonny has chosen Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) over his family and hurt Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) severely! General Hospital viewers know that Sonny is actually torn between Nina and Carly, but since Carly wanted a divorce, Sonny signed the papers and let her have her freedom.
General Hospital viewers can understand why Sonny’s staying out of the conflict between Michael and Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen) and Nina would be the right thing for Sonny. He sees it as a way of being neutral and not choosing sides but to Michael, Sonny’s refusing to side with him and Willow against Nina is a rejection of his family in favor of Nina! General Hospital viewers know that Michael is a lot like his mother, and he takes Sonny’s attempted neutrality as a rejection of both him and Carly!
Sonny, on the other hand, is quite offended by Michael’s assessment of his situation with Nina, given that they are not exactly in a romantic relationship with each other! Sonny thinks Michael is blowing his relationship with Nina way out of proportion but Michael won’t give it up – and the rift grows wider between them when Michael tells Sonny to go away after he comes to support him!
