Previous episodes of DOOL revealed Paulina witnessed TR Coates’ (William Christian) violence, Abe Carver (James Reynolds) bleeding out on the floor then Lani shooting TR, resulting in his death! This was all in a very few minutes, and Coates had been ready to hit Paulina when Lani saw Abe on the floor and shot Coates dead! Lani herself went into kind of a daze, and Paulina tried to take blame for the shooting but it was clearly a form of self-defense-defense of another.
After everything has calmed down and they know Abe will survive, Chanel and Lani rally around their mother. But they worry if she will suffer emotional or mental aftereffects from the violence that took place!
Viewers will remember that Paulina had been deathly afraid of TR, who then went by just “Ray” when she was a young teen. The Price family kept Lani’s parentage a secret for many years because Paulina gave baby Lani to her sister Tamara Price (Marilyn McCoo) to raise. That was because Paulina was so afraid Ray would track them down and the secret came out several months ago thanks to satan’s interference. It took a while for Paulina, Lani and Chanel to make up and forgiveness and acceptance to happen but they finally bonded as a real family. Once that happened they all became a loving and much stronger family together.
Paulina was much more concerned that Lani could be arrested for shooting Coates to death and tried to take the blame! She didn’t process her own fear and emotions in the confusion of Lani’s shot, responding to seeing Ray getting ready to hit her and Abe bleeding out on the floor. He’d lost enough blood from the blunt force trauma head wound delivered by Ray with Paulina’s baseball bat they didn’t know if he was dead or alive!
Chanel and Lani may not be psychiatrists but it doesn’t take a degree to know that Paulina could have post-traumatic stress effects after something like that! Paulina always portrays herself as a strong, self-made independent woman but underneath she was a scared little girl when TR turned on her that day!
Lani saw Paulina’s tough exterior but also saw the fear in her eyes and she and Chanel encourage her to talk to Dr. Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) about what she experienced. They aren’t a bit surprised when Paulina admits she’s been having nightmares about that day and about when she and Ray were involved years ago. Paulina talked to Marlena before, several months ago when she was torn about Lani needing to know the truth after she’d let a few slips happen. Calling the twins her grandchildren, for instance – when she was supposed to be their great aunt! After everything was said and done she was relieved it all came out in the open even if her and Tamara’s mother disapproved.
Paulina is finally convinced to talk to Marlena about what she endured as a young mother and more recently as well. Marlena explains that trauma like that is difficult for anyone to deal with, but trauma from the past layered on trauma more recently isn’t good for one’s mental health! She can prescribe something to help her sleep but talking it out is often the best therapy, along with support from her family – which she certainly has! Best of all, Coates can never come back to haunt her now that he’s finally out of everyone’s life for good, and eventually he won’t haunt her dreams!
