Viewers will remember that Leo was seen by Thomas DiMera (Cary Christopher) in the DiMera wine cellar the night of the murder, identifying himself as the tooth fairy. Chad DiMera (Billy Flynn) recently put two and two together and came up with four when Thomas pointed Leo out as the tooth fairy he’d found. Whether it’s busted in the basement or caught in the cellar, Leo is in big trouble now and has to figure a way out of it.
Chad and new Salem Police Detective Jada Hunter (Elia Cantu) search the DiMera wine cellar for evidence, and find it. They discover it was Leo’s hideaway while Detective Shawn Brady (Brandon Beemer) works on him at the Salem PD.
Leo is scared, to be sure, when he finds out that his hiding place revealed evidence of his having hid there. Is he scared straight, well, no, not quite, but he is scared enough to tell the truth. Viewers have long suspected that he witnessed the murder and came back later to rob the room where Abigail was killed that night, shaking like a leaf. Now he realizes he has to rat out the murderer or murderers in order to exonerate himself. What Chad and Jada find put him at the scene of the crime although it’s only circumstantial evidence, not nearly the smoking gun needed to catch the murderer or murderers. Abigail had mentioned “them” not “him” or “her” before she died although she didn’t mention names.
Leo knows he needs an attorney, and soon Attorney Sloan (Jessica Serfaty) arrives and they discuss his case. Sloan doesn’t think the police have enough evidence to charge him with Abigail’s murder or even hold him and works on getting him released. Sloan has a reputation of being a hotshot lawyer and Leo feels very positive that she can solve his problems.
However, before Sloan can get Leo out of the precinct, Jada arrives and announces she and Chad found a fork with Leo’s prints on it in the wine cellar. Leo had previously denied to Chad having met Thomas and he knows he’s busted now; and the walls of justice begin closing in on him.
As Jada and Shawn are conferring about the case with Salem Police Commissioner Rafe Hernandez (Galen Gering) Leo blurts out he witnessed the murder. Leo promises that he can prove who the real murderer was and will identify him or her. Leo is guilty of a crime, but it’s not murder, although he did steal Abigail’s jewelry and money after she was attacked. Leo feels more positive and so do the police, having an intriguing lead to follow. Leo will come through for the police because he won’t pay for a crime committed by someone else.
