Longtime viewers will remember that Laura Horton suffered from mental illness for many years, causing Jennifer to act out as a teenager. Ultimately, young Jennifer moved in with Doug and Julie Williams (Bill and Susan Seaforth Hayes) and was raised with Hope Williams Brady (Kristian Alfonso) like sisters. Jennifer has been going through extreme grief and pain for the past year or so, first losing her mother Laura and then her daughter Abigail Deveraux DiMera (Marci Miller).
Maggie was there for all of it and happens to come across antianxiety and depression prescription pills in Jennifer’s name. Maggie’s fears are that Jennifer may be headed down the same path as her mother.
Maggie knows that Jennifer has been in an untenable situation with finding out that Jack Deveraux (Matthew Ashford) had a love child who grew up to be Gwen Rizczech (Emily O’Brien). There is a good possibility that Gwen murdered both Laura and Abigail, and yet Jack still believes in her innocence and supports her. Maggie holds her tongue, but she knows a con artist when she sees one and Gwen even impersonated her own daughter Sarah Horton (Linsey Godfrey) and she doesn’t believe Gwen. But when Maggie finds those prescription pills that apparently fell out of Jennifer’s purse, she knows she has to have a talk with Jennifer and ask some difficult questions. She knows that mental health medicine has advanced years beyond when her sister in law Laura was in and out of hospitals but she still worries over her niece by marriage.
Maggie knows she has to return the pills, but she also knows Jennifer may not want to answer many questions about them. The fact that she has these prescriptions shows that Jennifer is not necessarily in a downwards spiral, but at the same time Maggie knows Laura’s illnesses could pass down. She seeks Jennifer out to return the pills, and to try and broach the subject delicately as a concerned aunt in law through Mickey Horton (most recently John Ingle).
Jennifer appreciates Maggie bringing her pill bottles to her right away, and lets her know she’s in grief therapy and her doctor prescribed the pills. Her anxiety and depression are situational, not hereditary, she’d asked the same questions herself; Maggie is beyond relieved.
