Jennifer had a real wake up call when she got home after going for a drive after taking one pill after another after another, and hallucinated her dead daughter. Of course, in Salem one never knows if a dearly departed loved one is a ghost, a hallucination, or even an angel, but in this case she was probably a hallucination. If Abigail really had come to Jennifer, like she did to Chad DiMera (Billy Flynn) in the cemetery, she certainly would have stopped her from driving.
Chances are, Abigail also would have told her mother to lay off the pills, and Gwen had tried to, threatening to tell her father. Years ago, when she was younger she’d gotten addicted, and when she got home Jack Deveraux (Matthew Ashford) and Julie Williams (Susan Seaforth Hayes) were very worried.
Jennifer has a talk with her son-in-law Chad, and tells him that she is headed for rehab, knowing that she’s gotten herself into a bad problem again. Her brother Mike Horton (Roark Critchlow) has come to Salem to help, and will get her into a therapeutic rehabilitation center that can get to the root of the problems. It’s understandable that Jennifer has had a difficult time coping with the death of her only daughter, trying to be strong for Jack. And it’s not been that long since Laura Horton (Jaime Lyn Bauer) died, and she was being the strong one then too, spending months with Mike getting her estate settled. Compounded grief can be very wearing emotionally and mentally, and Jennifer had been so busy caring for others she neglected her own self-care.
As Jennifer continues talking to Chad about Abigail, her grandchildren and her rehab plans, suddenly she gets a horrible memory back from the night she drove high. She realizes she ran over Gwen in front of the Salem police station, and she’s horrified, not knowing if she survived and says goodbye to Chad and rushes to the hospital. She is relieved to find Gwen alive and not too seriously injured, and she feels so guilty she tells Gwen she’s turning herself into the police.
But Gwen has no room for hate or revenge in her heart for Jennifer, she feels sorry for her because her own mother was an addict. Gwen forgives Jennifer and tells her she understands, and she’s not at fault because she was driving high and didn’t realize what she was doing.
