It’s not clear if it’s a medical issue, accident, or if someone intentionally tries to kill Paulina. In any case, it helps soften Lani Price-Grant’s (Sal Stowers) heart. It could also cause Abe to reconsider his decision about Paulina.

Abe already gave Paulina a second chance. That was after he found out that she deceived him about her plans for Horton Town Square. Paulina ended up getting everyone’s forgiveness for that, including Lani and Abe’s.
