When Hope first learns that Thomas wants a bigger part in his son’s life and wants Douglas to live with him, Hope fears losing the boy. Her father and her husband, Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanan) and Liam Spencer (Scott Clifton) urge her to fight to keep custody of Douglas, Liam assuming Thomas wants full custody. Viewers will remember that Hope legally adopted Douglas, having been his mother figure first then his adoptive mother when Thomas went off the rails.
Hope is the only mother Douglas has known, not remembering his birth mother, and Liam isn’t helping matters any with comments about Thomas wanting to rip Douglas away from them. Thomas portrayer Matt Atkinson notes in the Soap Opera Digest article that Thomas has no such intentions; he just wants to take his place as Douglas’ father.
Thomas realizes that Hope caring for Douglas on her own in the past was appropriate at the time, because he had major psychological problems. However, through a lot of therapy and understanding, particularly by his mother Taylor, albeit a great deal of long distance, he’s moved past them. Taylor certainly wouldn’t be pushing Thomas to push for a split custody arrangement with Douglas living with him more if he weren’t recovered. Steffy and Taylor are both very supportive of Thomas wanting to step up as Douglas’ father in a more real way than just visitation, and Steffy’s his biggest cheerleader. Thomas understands why he could not spend time with his son or care for him in the past, which of course is a huge part of healing.
Thomas feels that their roles as father and son are necessary at this time in both their lives, and Douglas wants to spend more time with Dad as well. A recent episode showed that Thomas had to take Douglas back to the Spencer cabin after a ball game and Douglas didn’t want to go. The disappointment was very visible in his little face and he wanted to stay with Dad more often.
What Thomas wants is an arrangement like most divorced parents would have, with Douglas being able to live both with him and Hope. But instead of being like divorced parents at each other’s throats, he wants Douglas to still be Hope’s and his, and he thinks they can all make it work.
Thomas wants him, Douglas, Liam, Hope and Beth Spencer (River Davison) to be one big happy family for Douglas, even though Thomas won’t be living with the Spencers. But, possibly being influenced by her past loss of Beth, thinking she died when she was with Steffy and named Phoebe, Hope fears losing Douglas. She may not be able to understand Thomas’ full intentions because of that past fear and only hears Thomas wants Douglas back and she’s blindsided. Thomas will continue to try and get through to Hope with his true intentions, but with Liam continuing to think custody battle it may be difficult.
