But stepping back for a moment, Sheila would never agree to give Deacon money for such a gift. She despises Brooke and knows keeping Deacon at his apartment provides continued protection.

Deacon is Sheila’s meal ticket. His forced choice to harbor this assumed-dead fugitive provides an indefinite setting for Brown’s character to remain on the show.

A realistic element of Deacon’s assumed-real offer was the love he professed. Kanan’s character told Brooke that she is the only woman for him.

It makes sense that knowledge of Ridge’s departure, including Brooke’s confirmation would provoke Deacon to make a grand gesture. Hope’s surprised response indicated that she did not know her dad would ask Brooke that ultimate question.

Hope wanted to push a reconnection between her parents, thinking that Deacon would be allowed to be on the property again after the Ridge-inspired ban. Instead, he pulled a velvet ring box from the right pocket of his black leather jacket, re-pledged his love, and asked for the still-married Brooke’s hand in marriage.
