The Idaho resident Ella thought of another way to finally meet Johnny after his plans were canceled. He can’t risk going to the United States during a pandemic because he has to take care of his elderly parents and his son, Stony.
Ella thought of meeting him in Dubai instead, but when she shared her plans with her parents, they were quick to disapprove of her. Ella’s parents are concerned that it wouldn’t be safe for her travel and fans weren’t happy with how they perceived the city.
Previously, Ella was slammed by fans for demanding she should be Johnny’s priority after her online boyfriend revealed he can’t proceed with his plans of flying to see her when his visa to Singapore was denied. Her parents agreed with her and a pressured Johnny mentioned his Plan B of spending two weeks in Dubai before flying over, in which Ella thought of meeting him halfway. But her parents, particularly her mother was against her plans, pointing out her concern if Dubai is a safe place.
TLC fans flooded the comment section of a now-deleted Reddit post about how Ella’s parents reacted to her proposal. Many pointed out their double standard for pressuring Johnny to come to the US despite his health and financial concerns but would stop their child from traveling because of the same reasons.
Many were irritated by how closed-minded Ella’s parents are for stereotyping the Entire Middle East, and those who have traveled to Dubai defended how safe the city is.
“We never felt unsafe, ever… Dubai might not fall under your conventional definition of American freedom, but its definitely a safer, cleaner and healthier city than most,” commented a Redditor who lived in Dubai for 17 years before residing to the US.
“Johnny has more reasons to not want to come to America than Ella does with Dubai. His are real, unlike “I’m an ignorant hillbilly and can’t find Dubai on a map,” commented another fan.
However, one fan pointed out the show’s editing might be a factor and that Ella’s parents might actually be “wholesome people”: ”Definitely [Dubai is] not everyone’s cup of tea but definitely not for the reasons they’re saying which makes it just look like ignorance (or racism honestly) or at least that’s how the editors cut it to be!”
It’s important that fans also consider how the show is being edited because just recently, Ella expressed her softer side to her Instagram account after fans blasted her for pressuring Johnny.
Posting a cryptic message with the quote: “A tongue has no bones but is strong enough to hurt someone. Choose your words carefully” she told her critics “to be kind” because they don’t know the entire story behind the scenes. “I know I put my life out there for you to see, but you only get to see about 20% of what’s really going on,” she wrote in the caption.
Ella isn’t one of the fan-favorites and her parents’ latest comment added fuel to the fire too. Some viewers even wished Johnny should find someone better because they believe Ella isn’t yet mature for the relationship and to mother his son Stony.
