British Royal family news reveals while it might have seemed like Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex suggested that the royal family took away her passport, driver’s license and keys to keep her isolated or perhaps, avoid a royal escape, that is not the case at all. In fact, royal experts say that the royals do not take away anyone’s passport simply because they don’t want them traveling abroad, but for a more important reason, instead. Here’s what you need to know.
This Is The Real Reason Why Meghan Markle Had To Give Up Her Passport And Keys To The Royal Family
During her explosive interview with Oprah on Sunday, the Duchess of Sussex made it seem like she felt shocked when officials took her passport away after she and Prince Harry got married back in May of 2018. For Meghan, it was something that she certainly didn’t expect to see happen, especially since was always an independent, full-time working and self-sufficient woman for many years.
Meghan told Oprah, “When I joined that family, that was the last time – until we came here to North America – that I saw my passport, my driver’s license, my keys. All that gets turned over. I didn’t see any of that anymore.”
Yet royal author and expert Robert Lacey told the BBC the reason Meghan had to hand over all of her most personal belongings were for security purposes and of course, her protection.
He said, “Meghan had to hand in her driving license under security rules. If she went out driving on her own, she would not be protected.”

British Royal News – Meghan’s Passport And Her Freedom
Robert Finch, who chairs the pro-monarchy group The Monarchist League of Canada, said that the royal family’s most valuable documents are kept in safes under the watchful eye of palace security. It’s not because they don’t want the royals to run off, but because they want to make sure they are safe at all times.
“Sounds as if it fitted Meghan’s narrative of being trapped and isolated, but really was routine, and probably anything would be accessible to her if she wanted it,” Finch also told the BBC.
