Ignoring the fall-out from the bombshells dropped in the Oprah interview, Prince Harry has vowed to return to the UK for his mother Princess Diana’s memorial service.
What will he face when he returns? And would it help or hurt if Meghan Markle goes with him?
Even though Prince Harry and Meghan Markle accused the royal family of racism amid other bombshells in the Oprah interview, Harry has reportedly vowed to stand “shoulder to shoulder” with Prince William this summer.
The occasion: The unveiling of a statue honoring Harry’s and William’s beloved mother, Princess Diana. The memorial is set to be revealed on July 1 at Kensington Gardens. With Harry and William rarely speaking together in the months since he and Meghan Markle left the UK, a royal family expert called the occasion “monumental” for the brothers.
In Harry’s interview with Oprah, he shared that he and William are following “different paths.” Moreover, Prince William subsequently denied the racism allegations that Meghan and Harry both made.
Given the rift with the royal family, is Harry returning too soon? Is it possible that his determination to unveil the statue as planned could actually make the rift worse?
There’s also the unanswered question of whether Meghan will travel with Harry to the ceremony honoring Princess Diana (her second pregnancy may prevent the visit). But if she does, it opens the door to the possibility that Markle and her husband will stand together, with William and his own wife Kate Middleton steering clear of the couple.
At this point, insiders are describing Harry and William as emotionally “as far apart as it’s possible to be.” William reportedly is furious with his brother in the wake of the Oprah interview.
“Their relationship is at rock bottom,” summed up one source. “William’s raging with Harry after the Oprah interview.”
Consequently, the insider contended that William is “so angry” with Harry that “it’s totally unthinkable at the moment for them to be happily reunited and stood together at the unveiling of the Princess Diana statue.”
What is clear: One of the brothers is going to have to step up and seek to somehow mend their relationship prior to the memorial for their mother. Otherwise, we may see William and Harry choosing to stand apart rather than shoulder to shoulder — something that would deeply wound Princess Diana if she were still alive.
