British royal family news shows that Meghan Markle contacted Naomi Osaka after the tennis star left the French Open after refusing to do interviews.
The four-time Grand Slam champion and former No. 1-ranked player wrote an essay for Time magazine’s Olympic preview issue and in it name dropped individuals who contacted her.
“I want to thank everyone who supported me,” the 23-year-old wrote. “There are too many to name, but I want to start with my family and friends, who have been amazing. There is nothing more important than those relationships. I also want to thank those in the public eye who have supported, encouraged and offered such kind words. Michelle Obama, Michael Phelps, Steph Curry, Novak Djokovic, Meghan Markle, to name a few.”
The issue dropped on Friday and in her piece Osaka said athletes should not have to do interviews: “There can be moments for any of us where we are dealing with issues behind the scenes. Each of us as humans is going through something on some level.”
Before the French Open began Osaka said she wouldn’t speak to the media during that tournament citing her discomfort.
After her first-round victory in Paris, Osaka was fined $15,000 for skipping the mandatory news conference. Officials let her know the consequences for refusing media events could be disqualification or suspension.
Osaka then withdrew form competition saying she has anxiety before news conferences and has experienced depression.
“Believe it or not, I am naturally introverted and do not court the spotlight,” she wrote. “I always try to push myself to speak up for what I believe to be right, but that often comes at a cost of great anxiety.”
She is also sitting out Wimbledon, which ends Sunday. It is thought that Osaka will compete at the Tokyo Olympics. The games begin July 23 and she will represent Japan although she was raised in America.
“It has become apparent to me that literally everyone either suffers from issues related to their mental health or knows someone who does,” Osaka wrote. “I do hope that people can relate and understand it’s OK to not be OK, and it’s OK to talk about it,” she added.
According to Osaka, news conferences are, “out of date.” She wants tennis players to be, “excused from your press commitments without having to disclose your personal reasons.”
