Dubbed Megxit, Markle and her Prince’s announcement resulted in Queen Elizabeth stripping them of their positions as working royal family members for at least a year, at which time she would review the situation. As for the titles “Royal Highness”? Bye, Felicia.
Since then, Meghan and Harry have settled down in the ultra-posh community of Montecito. Their mansion, which cost a mere $14.65 million, also provides the opportunity to network with neighbors like Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
But befriending celebrities hasn’t made a difference to how the Queen feels about Megxit. Now that the year of probation has passed, the Queen announced Harry and Meghan will not be welcomed back into the family as working royals.
“Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service,” said the Palace in a statement representing Her Majesty.
In response to that Statement, 36-year-old Harry and 39-year-old Meghan had many options. They could have taken a few weeks to think over a proper response. Or perhaps the couple could have attempted to appease Her Majesty by asking for another year of consideration.
Ahem. Apparently playing the waiting game is not their royal style.
Instead, the Prince and Markle immediately pushed back, fueling the royal family feud by issuing their own statement, “We can all live a life of service. Service is universal.”
Translation: “Oh, Queen, you are so wrong, and we’re going to prove it to you!” Ouch. And the two didn’t stop there.
Not only did Harry and Meghan dare to disagree with the Queen, but they made it clear that they intend to continue with the work that they did as members of the Royal Family. Their office stated that the couple “remain committed to their duty and service to the U.K. and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organizations they have represented regardless of official role.”
It’s clear that Megxit was the royal exit that just keeps on giving in terms of controversy.
