Prince William’s College Classmates Reveal Kate Middleton Romance Details

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge famously met during their freshman year in college, and though, according to their own words, they were friends for a lot of time during those days, a college classmate recently revealed that “whenever Kate was in the room, Will was obviously paying attention to her.”

William And Kate’s Relationship Through The Eyes Of A College Mate

According to a classmate who also attended the University of St. Andrews in Scotland with the royal couple, the connection between Kate and William was obvious to those around them from the start.

Laura Warshauer is a New Jersey and a St. Andrews student who lived in the same dorm as the couple, spoke about knowing William and Kate and their college love story for PEOPLE’s new special edition “William and Kate: Ten Joyous Years”.

“Whenever Kate was in the room, Will was obviously paying attention to her,” Warshauer fondly remembers. “When we’d be sitting at lunch in the dining hall and the two of them would be talking, it was amazing to see how natural it was, how they had so much to say to each other. Looking back, there were all these small moments—certainly moments where I was like, ‘Wow, this could really be something.'”

It did grow into something and in their sophomore year, the pair had become housemates, sharing a four-bedroom flat with two other friends. They frequently also walked to class together as “friends” in those days.

William And Kate’s College Love Story Through Their Eyes

In a 2010 interview about their engagement, the couple, who also recently celebrated their 10-year anniversary, talked about what it was like for them in college and getting to grow from strangers to lovers within the course of their college years.

“I actually think I went bright red when I met you and sort of scuttled off, feeling very shy about meeting you,” Kate said about William. “It did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other but we did become very close friends from quite early.”

William added: “We moved in together as friends. We lived with a couple of others as well, and it just sort of blossomed from there, really. We just saw more of each other, and you know, hung out a bit more and did stuff.”

The couple has truly shown off that natural ease they have with each other with their first YouTube video, which saw the parents of three playfully teasing each other and just laughing and having a great time.
