General Hospital (GH) spoilers tease that Brando and Sasha Corbin (Johnny Wactor, Sofia Mattsson) will receive a heartbreaking diagnosis this week on General Hospital as their newborn, Liam Mike Corbin (uncast infant) is found to have no brain activity.
General Hospital Spoilers – Sasha’s Difficult Birth Caused Liam To Be Oxygen Deprived
General Hospital viewers will recall that Sasha went into labor as she and Gladys Corbin (Bonnie Burroughs) were locked in a storage closet at the Jerome Art Gallery. This was during the Photo Ark exhibit, and Esme Prince (Avery Kristen Pohl) had thought she’d trapped Trina Robinson (Sydney Mikayla). Luckily, as General Hospital viewers will recall, Brando went looking for Sasha and found them. Sasha was rushed to General Hospital with Brando and Gladys close behind, and was in labor for several hours.
Then Sasha experienced severe pain, and was rushed to the operating room as it was discovered that she had suffered placental abruption, and underwent an emergency cesarean section. Unfortunately, her baby suffered oxygen deprivation and was placed in a specialized neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and kept under a cooling blanket to hopefully minimize the oxygen to his brain. Brando and Sasha have been waiting around a week or so hoping against hope for Liam to be able to come home with them.
GH Spoilers – Hoping Against Hope
General Hospital viewers will note that Sasha and Brando have been hoping against hope that the oxygen deprivation suffered by Liam has done no permanent damage to his brain. In a recent episode of General Hospital, the baby underwent specialized brain function testing using a test called an electroencephalogram, which measures brain functions. It is commonly known as an EEG.
Brando and Sasha have been scared, seeing their tiny newborn hooked up to all kinds of monitors and wires inside the incubator, they have not even been able to hold him yet although he was briefly shown to them immediately after birth, and they have only seen him in the incubator since. Brando has been trying to be the strong one and support Sasha, but at times it has been extremely difficult for him not to reveal his fear. Brando and Sasha both have been trying to be positive, but Brando has been taking on most of the load to keep both of them from falling apart!
General Hospital Spoilers – The Results Are In, And They Are Devastating!
General Hospital viewers will see Dr. Britt Westbourne (Sofia Mattsson) and another doctor, Dr. Fleming, likely a neonatal neurologist (uncredited) inform Sasha and Brando of the devastating diagnosis. Britt tries to be as kind and as gentle as she can, considering the horrible news she has to deliver. Both Brando and Sasha have been in a form of denial, hoping so hard against hope that their son will not have suffered any permanent damage.
But General Hospital viewers will be saddened to find out that the diagnosis is not as the news parents had so desperately hoped – the electroencephalogram has revealed that Liam has no brain activity at all – and they are informed that he would be in a persistent vegetative state the rest of his life. Britt and Dr. Fleming tell the devastated parents that Liam may live for a few years but will be on life support. There is no hope for him to come out of this and have any sort of quality of life whatsoever.
Now they are faced with the decision whether to try to keep him alive on life support and hope for advances in medicine, possibly, or remove life support and say goodbye to their newborn forever. Sasha is in such shock at the diagnosis that she doesn’t fully grasp what this all means; but as for Brando, it takes a minute to sink in, but when it does, it hits him like a ton of bricks! It will be a horrible decision for the couple, but when Britt spells out there will be no quality of life and the baby will not know who they are, they know they must make a decision and it won’t be easy!
