American Ariela and Biniyam are living in his homeland of Ethiopia with their young son, Aviel, who is nine months old. It hasn’t been an easy journey for the family, but now things are getting even more complicated.
In this week’s episode of 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way, Ari and Bini are facing new and scary parenting obstacles. In a teaser clip released by People, the couple takes their 9-month-old son Aviel to the pediatrician. They had noticed a pronounced “bulge in his groin area” which showed up whenever he cried, strained or became angry.

Ariela says in a confessional that, as a new mom, anytime they take Avi to the doctor, she is always worried that they will receive bad news. She says, “I’m just hoping they’re going to reassure me that everything is fine and I’m just having a first-time mom overreaction.”

In the episode, the 90 Day Fiancé stars visit Dr. Nebiyat Tesfaye, who examines Avi in his office and soon provides his diagnosis. He says, “I think that he has a hernia, so what he needs is a surgical intervention which he will need as soon as possible.”

Naturally, mention of her son needing surgery concerns Ariela, who says she thinks the operation seems “very extreme.” However, Dr. Tesfaye assures her, saying, yes, it is shocking, but it is common in pediatrics. He says many babies go through the surgery.

Despite this, Ari tells the doctor she is nervous about the idea of her young son going under anesthesia. She asks the doctor if they can delay the surgery. However, Dr. Tesfaye explains that the surgery should be done as soon as possible, because the hernia is in Avi’s intestine. He explains that by delaying the surgery, further problems could arise.
