Elizabeth probably assumed that their Moldovan wedding would be held in Andrei’s parents’ church, along with their baby daughter Eleanor’s baptism, but instead, Andrei took her to a casino downtown that was used as a wedding venue in the daytime as his father sat with Eleanor in the car.
It is possible that their church does not have a “fellowship hall” and kitchen, as most churches in America do and therefore no place for a reception, or perhaps it’s a very small church and it is simply not large enough to hold sixty people, which is the number of guests that Andrei and Elizabeth.
Another spoiler indicates that Elizabeth did consent to be baptized and will be, as Eleanor will be, so perhaps they are holding the baptisms in the church and the wedding in a different wedding venue than the church due to space or kitchen facilities constraints.
But when they went inside the casino/wedding venue, and Elizabeth wanted to find out what the food options were, the manager could only show photos of the food in a menu as they did not have cooks working in order to prepare samples. Elizabeth didn’t like that idea at all!
She was not going to expect her family to eat food that they had no idea about and that may not be their preference. It would seem that Elizabeth cared more about Andrei’s country and Andrei’s family adapting to her family, who are Floridians when they in fact will be visitors and guests in Moldova. And that just doesn’t happen there – not to mention, what is the point of visiting a foreign country if you want it to be just like home, even if it is to attend a wedding?
Elizabeth insulted the venue and Andrei’s choice by telling him not only would she not accept a venue that did not have food samples, but also complained about the furniture being “tacky and outdated” disregarding the fact that Moldova is a different country than the United States, and in Moldova, that furniture may be the latest thing and considered quite elegant! Andrei clearly wasn’t concerned about what her family wanted, and in his country with them as guests, he actually would be correct.
For guests to complain to the hosts that what they were providing wasn’t good enough would be an insult, as it would be to any American hosting a guest, whether from their own country or not. She complained further about her family not liking any American options for dining while in Moldova and at the wedding reception in particular, while Andrei semi-sarcastically joked that if they didn’t like the Moldovan food, there was a McDonald’s right across the street!
At that point, Elizabeth stormed off and started down the street, after a bitter on-camera argument about Andrei needing to be more understanding and his having interrupted her several times! The argument escalated into cursing each other as well.
She said further on camera separately, to the producers, that while she understood that in Moldova, these foods shown in the menu book were delicacies, her American family would be “weirded out” by these foods because they were different looking than American foods. Andrei then said he wasn’t going to change anything to please his in-laws with the food, the venue, or anything. He said it’s THEIR wedding and it’s about THEM, not her family!
