With 2021 set to dawn, following an extended production shutdown in 2020 that tested viewers loyalty like no time before, Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford), Chance Chancellor (Donny Boaz), and Amanda Sinclair (Mishael Morgan) want the next calendar year to be brighter than this one. But they need to make that happen, rather than just offer resolutions.
The Grand Phoenix hotel was intended as Phyllis’ comeback base of operations. She’s been feeling like a failure during the later part of December because her boyfriend, Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow), had to loan her a significant amount of capital. That was necessary because his sister took control of Phyllis’ debt, intending to force her out of the Phoenix.
In accepting Nick’s offer, Phyllis feels that she no longer controls her destiny. But the payment plan Nick is presenting creates an opportunity.
Phyllis’ creativity is the reason why, like the Phoenix, she’s been reborn. So, viewers should expect another Escape Club like idea and some good fortune to combine, allowing Stafford’s character to fulfill her resolution and become an independent business owner (or close to that status) next year.
Adoption is the alternative when a couple isn’t able to have their own biological child. If Abby Newman Abbott Chancellor (Melissa Ordway) isn’t able to have a child, or Chance isn’t able to father one, then Chabs should pursue a different course.
As this is the soap world, any challenges this likable couple faces with birth issues could always be rectified in the future. But having them adopt a child, as part of an overall tale that involves some other type of drama, would be a feel-good story when viewers are looking for an emotional lift.
Continuing the birth theme, Amanda wants to get to know her mother. Naya Benedict (Ptosha Storey) gave up her twin girls at birth, with one being raised by a cousin, Rose Turner (Leslie Stevens), and the other going into the foster care system.
Amanda has already learned that her mother came from a wealthy family and still has money today. She also knows that Naya has a third daughter. So, that’s a start.
With Devon Hamilton’s (Bryton James) continued support, Amanda will meet and get to know Naya in the new year. This storyline will also afford Morgan a completely different character plot path to walk on. That freshness will be valued by Y&R’s devoted fans.
