Often fans must suspend disbelief in order to digest a day’s events—back from the dead, baby switches, fake DNA tests, and other fantastic plots. These staples of daytime dramas are part and parcel of why we watch, but every now and then a show will throw us a curve that makes us appreciate the genre even more.

Y&R started off the week with an episode that was pure storytelling gold; nuanced, real and honest. For starters, it was cathartic to finally see Sharon (Sharon Case) break down in gentle defeat. After getting her breast cancer diagnosis viewers have seen her yell, cry, and snap at her loved ones as she fought to handle her emotions. This time was different as she sat with Rey (Jordi Vilasuso) and just softly wept, too tired to lash out, exhausted and scared.

Likewise, the show kept the real moments coming when Jack (Peter Bergman) and Billy (Jason Thompson) met up. Jack broke the news that Dina (Marla Adams) has taken a turn for the worse and his worry was palpable as he shared his fears. Ridiculously self-centered Billy thought this was all about him!

Jack rebuked the lost soul by telling him that he would never use his mother’s dire situation as a tool to help Billy see the error of his ways. Bravo Jack, but Billy still won’t get the message!

The Young and the Restless spoilers – Mariah gave in to the dark side

Finally, Mariah (Camryn Grimes) found out what happens when the pot calls the kettle black. For days she’s been steamed that Tessa (Caitlin Fairbanks) seems to be having too much fun without her, culminating in her cooking up a fantasy that her partner is having an affair behind her back.

In a stunning turn of events Mariah fell for the first pretty face to give her some attention and slept with a complete stranger! How satisfying was it then for fans to see the bewildered (and hypocritical) redhead get caught in the act?

Kudos to Y&R for bringing a day filled with human emotion and situations that viewers could relate to, in an understated way that resonated loud and clear.
