Since the actors and crew are practicing strict social distancing protocols, that means that the actors necessarily can’t kiss or cuddle with each other during filming. And since soaps are all about the kissing and cuddling, something had to be done.
B&B’s answer to the dilemma has been to use mannequins as stand-ins for the actors. While it doesn’t mean that viewers actually see the actors lock lips with mannequins, it does mean that mannequins are used subtly, with actors leaning in and looking like they’re going to kiss, but then a quick switch is made, and for an instant, viewers see the back of a mannequin standing close to an actor.
This occurred in a kissing scene a while back between Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye) and Brooke Logan (Katherine Kelly Lang), and most recently in a kissing scene between Carter Walton (Lawrence Saint-Victor) and Zoe Buckingham (Kiara Barnes). It happened to be Carter and Zoe’s first kiss, so it was a pretty big moment, and the show handled it well given the restrictions put into place due to COVID-19.
Well, it wasn’t long before one of the late-night TV hosts got wind of the use of mannequins on B&B, and he decided to poke a little fun. You have to admit that it is a bit humorous, and so Jimmy Fallon included a joke about Carter and Zoe’s mannequin kiss on The Tonight Show. Then Lawrence Saint-Victor, who plays Carter, shared the bit on his Instagram feed.
In Jimmy Fallon’s bit, he actually showed a video of Carter and Zoe’s first kiss, complete with Carter leaning in to kiss the mannequin of Zoe, which viewers could only see from behind. Jimmy’s viewers got a chuckle out of the whole thing, and Lawrence Saint-Victor even saw the humor in it.
Lawrence posted the video of Jimmy Fallon poking fun at the mannequin use, along with several LOL emojis and the following caption: “@kiarabarnesofficial and I got roasted by @jimmyfallon @fallontonight. Man, what we’ll do for our art. #mannequinchallenge #boldandbeautiful #thetonightshow #jimmyfallon.”
Lawrence’s followers on Instagram had fun with the joke as well. One follower commented: “Omg I can’t!! That is hysterical, but that’s one lucky mannequin.” Another person replied: “I saw this bro! #WhateverItTakes.” And Ashley Jones (Bridget Forrester, B&B) replied simply by saying “Amazing!”
Of course, if you’ve been following this story for a while, you’ll know that social media was full of comments and virtual laughter over the use of mannequins on B&B, ever since Executive Producer Brad Bell first mentioned the possibility that they’d pair the actors with mannequins in the first place.
The good news here is that the show goes on, and B&B or any of the other soaps aren’t letting the challenges associated with COVID-19 stop them from producing great content for viewers. We can deal with the mannequins to keep our shows afloat, but we might poke fun here and there – it’s all in good fun!
