The first soap operas were based on love stories and that trend continues today. Even though modern soaps have more drama than romance, fans still complain if there aren’t enough lovey-dovey romance storylines.
So, that makes production a bit difficult since social distancing will keep our favorite characters apart. This means soaps like B&B either need to change how they write stories or come up with creative solutions. The problem with avoiding love scenes is that viewers will quickly complain and get bored. Even two characters hugging, giving a quick kiss, or sitting on the couch talking requires some imagination and improvisation.
As we previously reported, there are a variety of methods that the soap plans to use with love scenes. Real-life spouses will stand in as “romantic doubles.” Lighting tricks and camera angles can be used in some cases. Focusing on visual cues rather than actions is another idea. The soap will also have actors standing alone, even though it will appear on TV screens that there are two characters in the scene.
But what about the bedroom scenes? It’s hardly romantic to see characters in bed together, both with masks on their faces. Well, that’s where the mannequin and blow-up dolls come into play.
The Bold and the Beautiful might be getting laughed at for the blow-up doll idea, but it’s actually a smart one. Viewers won’t be able to tell that it’s a doll because they will be wearing wigs and positioned in such a way where it’s not obvious.
Plus, while other soaps are still on hiatus, at least B&B is back in business (although on a temporary break to handle a large volume of COVID testing). At least they are trying to come up with solutions where all the other soaps remain silent.
Listen, many of you complained about no new episodes and complained about filming still being halted. Now that the CBS soap is back, you are complaining about how they plan to keep actors safe. Instead of whining and poking fun at people who are actually trying to come up with solutions, why don’t we just wait and see how they pull this off.
They need to be given some credit for trying to keep actors safe without causing viewers to be alienated, bored, or having everyone blow kisses from eight feet away. If someone has some better ideas on how to adhere to the eight-feet away rule, especially during love scenes, then speak up. If you don’t have any realistic suggestions, then perhaps we can give B&B, and all the other shows we love our support.
