Seeing how the entire world is either canceling or postponing every single event on the planet, Prince Harry is now doing the same. The Duke of Sussex has announced that he is postponing the Invictus Games until 2021. The annual games are a multi-sporting event in which wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and their associated veterans take part in nine sports including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and indoor rowing.
Prince Harry posted a video, which was most likely taken in his new Vancouver Island mansion, telling his fans and social media followers from around the world that the games are being tentatively rescheduled for next year. His clip was shared on the Games’ 2020 Twitter account on Thursday.
“This was an incredibly difficult decision for all of us to have to make,” he says in the clip. “I’m so grateful for everybody who has worked so incredibly hard over the last couple of weeks to try and find any alternative to try and carry out these games, in a different way and in a safe way. But this decision was the most sensible and the safest option for all of you and your families as well as everybody else involved in these games.”
The Prince added, “I know how disappointed you all must be. This is a focus that so many of you need.”
Meanwhile, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle were the first members of the royal family to release a statement about the novel coronavirus.
Earlier this week they shared a message on their Instagram account, urging people to be mindful and to not lose their sense of compassion and community during these now uncertain but also very challenging times.
Prince William and Kate Middleton followed up with their own message on the Kensington Royal account a few hours later. Queen Elizabeth, who will be making her way to Windsor Castle in the coming days, posted her own message on the royal family’s official social media accounts as well.
As of press time, the novel coronavirus has infected over 256,000 people in 150 countries, with that number expected to grow every day. Meanwhile, the death toll has surpassed over 10,500 people. Stay tuned right here for all of the latest news and updates on the royal family.
