When asked to name modern scandals in the British royal family, most royal watchers would no doubt point to “Megxit.” The fact that Prince Harry met and married an American woman didn’t sit well with some. Then, following Prince Harry’s audacity in actually behaving as if he had a mind of his own, Harry and Meghan chose to step back entirely from their royal duties. Moreover, Prince Harry and Meghan chose to resign as senior members of The Firm. Harry and Meghan’s actions were positively shocking to some!
However, Meghan and Harry’s actions ought not to have shocked people much. Harry was simply taking a page from King Edward VIII’s playbook. Royal historians know that King Edward had but a brief time on the throne. The fact is, Harry was simply copying his ancestor. That’s because King Edward abdicated and left his royal position so that he too could marry an American by the name of Wallis Simpson. (This was a scandalous thing at the time considering the fact that Wallis was a woman who had been married twice before.)
While Harry and Meghan Markle have chosen to settle in the United States, Harry’s forebear and wife settled in France.
In any case, then, it may not be so shocking that there are reports Prince Harry’s father, Prince Charles may not mind so much that his younger son ditched Merry Old England and his royal family. That’s because the Prince of Wales apparently wants to downsize The Firm when he becomes king. How that might play out, however, is anyone’s guess.
Now, some have pointed out that anyone who is born into the British royal family ought rightly to be considered a “working royal.” However, in practice that isn’t the case. As of 2020, there are about eighteen working royals (minus the Duke and Duchess of Sussex).
As royal fans know, some of these working royals include Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles and Camilla, Prince William and Kate Middleton, Princess Beatrice, Princess Alexandra, etc.

However, according to reports, Prince Charles wants to cut the number of working royals down even more than it already has been since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left! Supposedly, this is to reduce the number of potential scandals and improve the royal family’s overall image.
Could this be a move by Prince Charles to reduce the amount of money the Crown requires? Could it be that British citizens are simply becoming tired of supporting the privileged lifestyles of an entire family? Perhaps Prince Charles knows this and is attempting to reduce the level of disgust some might have for the British monarchy these days?
Of course, those working royals who find themselves on the threshing floor of The Firm’s downsizing moves may become a bit put off. Thus, on the one hand Prince Charles may be concerned with the family’s public image, but at the very same time he may need to concern himself with inter-family politics. What is it many royal fans say? “It isn’t easy being king.”
