General Hospital viewers will recall that Nikolas and Ava went to France and visited Spencer at his boarding school several months ago; although Spencer was polite with Ava, he was incensed at his father for playing dead for three-plus years, and leaving him out of the loop; he told Nikolas “to stay the hell out of his life!”
Ava was very kind to Spencer, but apparently he was being merely polite to her because now, several months later Nikolas opens the letter, and Spencer gives him an ultimatum in it; Ava or him! He will allow his father back in his life if he divorces Ava!
Of course, Nikolas thinks this is great! Since Ava and he have been getting along okay and he thinks she will be on his side, he thinks he can have it all and eliminate her from the equation! She blackmailed him into marrying her because she had the codicil that disinherited Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) and returned Wyndemere Castle and the Cassadine fortune to Nikolas.
Furthermore, there is a postnup that he signed that he would not divorce her – but he thinks just because they seem to be on the same side, that she will go along with his request for an amicable divorce and to tear up the postnup.
Ava tells him she is thrilled that Spencer is coming around, and in Nikolas’ mind, he thinks that she is going to tear up the paperwork and just let him go, move out of the house, and they go their separate ways but remain, friends, since he does want to keep the friendship intact.
Plus, there is still the thought in the back of his mind that even if they do divorce, that maybe Spencer will come around regarding Ava too and see that she’s not the horrible person that he thinks she is – Ava has been changed by the death of her daughter Kiki Jerome (Hayley Erin) and the fact that she never made things right with her and now it’s too late.
Ava says tells him this is great, and she’s thrilled that Spencer wants Nikolas back in his life, and tells him to go be with his son but make sure he packs his bags because she’s not giving up the castle and the money!
Then the fight of the century ensues between Nikolas and Ava! He’s hurt, because of her being his only friend, and there possibly being some romantic attachment between them, and he feels betrayed by Ava! It’s not easy for Nikolas to give up his inheritance to her, because he has always found a great deal of his self-esteem in his money and the fact that he’s a wealthy Cassadine!
This is what fueled his hatred of Valentin and what fueled his decision to “stay dead” until he could get back what was rightfully his, and be able to pass on to his son. It’s not an easy decision – both he and Spencer are accustomed to a certain lifestyle, and to be thought of as the foolish man who gave his wealth up to a gold-digging woman is not an image he wants to project either to the public or his son or have his son see him that way!
Nikolas decides he is going to find a way to have it all – he wants the fortune and his son, and Ava is damned! He’s either going to have to find a way to drive her away that doesn’t give her everything, or make moves that are far more desperate!
