General Hospital viewers will have noticed that Nina has already started to subconsciously “mother” Nelle when she told Jasper “Jax” Jacks (Ingo Rademacher) that she was more like Nelle than she cared to admit, and she had talked to Nelle about Wiley Corinthos (Theodore and Erik Olson) and that it would be in her best interest, as well as Wiley’s, for her to have signed the consent form so Wiley could have had his surgery – as it was, Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) forged her signature and Bobbie Spencer (Jacklyn Zeman) shredded it after he had his surgery!
But, Nina continued, if Nelle had signed the form it would prove to the family court that she was a good mother who put her child’s best interests ahead of her own interests and opinions, and it would have gone a long way towards her getting joint custody of Wiley with Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell). Nina did, however, understand Nelle’s fears of surgery on such a little one, especially considering that she had surgery to remove a kidney against her wishes as a teenager, and had said that she had continuing health problems afterward.
Nina Reeves is a fixer – this was proven through all her longsuffering years with Valentin Cassadine, (James Patrick Stuart) when she tried to get him to stop lying and manipulating and scheming. She wouldn’t have put up with it as long as she did if she hadn’t held out hope that he could change. The only problem is with that, she had to learn that she could not force another person to change; she can try to inspire change in a person, but ultimately it is up to that person as to whether he or she wants to change or not.
Sometimes people cannot be fixed, even if they want to be – but a fixer doesn’t want to believe that. A fixer usually believes the best of people, and that it is good in all people – they just have to find it. However, it works much better if the person finds it in themselves! As a result of that kind of belief, people like Nina are frequently disappointed and hurt by the people who are close to them, because their expectations of themselves don’t match the fixer’s expectations – which are sometimes subconscious and the fixer doesn’t even realize he or she is trying to fix the other person!
However, Nelle has shown some vulnerability lately – General Hospital viewers actually saw some tears from Nelle when she was talking to Carly on the roof of General Hospital, and remembering the first time she met Carly when she was a small child (Willa Rose) and Carly came to Frank Benson’s (James Patrick Stuart) apartment to ask for past-due child support for her mother, Virginia Benson (Cynthia Watros) and also to ask about her birth parents.
Frank didn’t know who her birth father was but told her about Ruby Anderson (Norma Connolly) and Bobbie. Nelle started to cry when Carly didn’t remember her from Frank’s apartment – but then it came back to her, and she acknowledged her and asked Nelle if she had been that little girl! There is a chance – just a chance – that Nelle might be changed, or be willing to change, when experiencing a true mother’s love – one without judgment, one that is unconditional, one that believes in her.
It is those tears that show that Nelle may be redeemable, and Nina’s true mother’s love for her may just do the trick – even if gradually and slowly!
