General Hospital viewers will recall that Nikolas realized the grave mistakes he had made when he visited his mother, Laura, in her room at General Hospital in Monday’s episode, after she had been shot. He told her all the mistakes he had made and that he had realized that he had wasted years letting the darkness in and planning his revenge on Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) instead of being there for her and his son, Spencer Cassadine (Nicolas J. Bechtel).
He promised to do better and be better, although Laura appeared unconscious and he wasn’t sure she heard him, until she woke up briefly and did acknowledge she heard him, and also that she loves him. Now, it’s time to be frank with her oldest son about what it will take to truly make amends.
Laura undoubtedly regrets – likely in secret – not bringing Nikolas with her all those years ago when she escaped Cassadine Island and returned home to Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary). Whether she tells Nikolas these regrets remains to be seen, but the way she left him to be raised by his uncle and his grandmother seems to mirror the way he left Spencer for her to raise – although the circumstances were vastly different.
Laura was escaping captivity – Nikolas was playing dead while plotting revenge. But, if she had brought her young son with her when she fled, he may have turned out a whole lot differently than he has – perhaps, more Spencer-like than Cassadine-like. Longtime General Hospital viewers will recall that Nikolas was a teenager when he came to Port Charles, along with his uncle, Stefan Cassadine (Stephen Nichols) to save the life of his baby sister, Lulu Spencer (Emme Rylan) when she needed a donor match to prevent her from dying from aplastic anemia.
It was a difficult transition for everyone, Luke having difficulty accepting his stepson and Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson) having difficulty accepting his stepbrother. But, one can’t undo what’s been done, just like one can’t unsee what’s been seen, and Laura understands that through her own experience.
Laura will be frank with Nikolas that there is no quick process for forgiveness and healing, although she admits that people can make a choice to forgive even if they can’t feel the forgiveness yet. These are deep wounds that he has caused, and it will be especially difficult for Spencer to accept Nikolas back in his life as his father because as Spencer told him, he could have reached out at least to him and asked him to keep his secret as he had when he tried to fake his death previously.
Spencer didn’t, but he was a young kid then and his elders forced him into revealing the truth. Laura, Spencer and Lulu will need to see Nikolas prove himself to them because it will be difficult to reestablish trust after what he has done, and that will take time. There is no quick process, but it is true that time can heal all wounds – if those who are wounded allow themselves to heal, and if Nikolas perseveres in proving himself, with patience.
