Does Kate Middleton Have To Curtsy To William? What You Need To Know!

Kate Middleton is set to be Queen Consort one day, which involves wearing really huge tiaras and standing next to her husband Prince William for the rest of their lives as they attend royal functions and represent the UK both at home and abroad. It is an exalted title, and their lives will no doubt be grand.

But, as one of the future leaders of the royal family, there is a royal custom that even Kate won’t be able to get out of no matter how hard she tries once she and William ascended the throne after Prince Charles’ reign. For now, though, Queen Elizabeth is Britain’s longest-serving monarch and is completely committed to her role at the age of 94.

For Now, William And Kate Are Repping The Country Well And With Discretion

William is not yet King however and in the meantime, the couple have shown nothing but dedication and devotion to their roles as senior royals. In particular, they have been outstanding role models during the coronavirus pandemic.

But William is second in line to the throne and is expected to succeed his father, Prince Charles, down the road. When that happens Kate will be referred to as Queen Consort and be expected to observe a certain royal custom when in her husband’s presence.

What Royal Custom Must Kate Observe When With William?

This royal rule is non-negotiable apparently! It involves an expectation that royal protocol is observed, especially when the Queen is present.

To cut to the chase, royal custom decrees that all those who meet the British sovereign are required to bow to him or her, including royal family members.

The upshot is that this means that female member of the royal family curtsey, while male members bow their heads when greeting the Queen—even her husband, Prince Philip.

Royal Etiquette Means Kate Will Curtsy To William

This means that Kate must curtsy to her husband William in public once he becomes King.

In reality, Prince Philip has rarely bowed to the Queen during her nearly 70-year reign!

So, it remains to be seen if Kate and William similarly forego the formality of bowing when in public. We can’t say what they may do in private, however!

With one exception, it is expected that Kate will formally bow to her husband when Prince William is crowned.

After that day she will be called the Queen Consort and enjoy fewer powers than King William.
