British Government’s Patience On Prince Harry And Meghan’s Debt At An End

Those who have paid attention to the unfolding story of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle know that the couple spent a pretty sum on refurbishing Frogmore Cottage, a house gifted to them by Queen Elizabeth. Now, there would have been nothing wrong with Meghan and Prince Harry renovating their own home if they had spent their own money to restore the property. However, that’s not what Prince Harry and Meghan Markle did. Instead of using their own money, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spent British taxpayer funds to the tune of £2.4 million.

It has irked quite a number of British citizens, including well-known media figures such as Piers Morgan, and now that anger has reached members of the British parliament. Knowing that Prince Harry and Meghan owe this kind of money to the British taxpayers while flying all over the world, paying out huge sums to rent palatial mansions in Canada and the USA, and then dropping $14.5 Million on an exclusive estate in celebrity-filled Montecito, California has left most with a bad taste in their mouths.

British MP Demands Prince Harry And Meghan Pay Taxpayers Back

It should be noted that Prince Harry and Meghan actually have been slowly paying British taxpayers back for what they spent on Frogmore renovations. In fact, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been sending monthly payments of £18,000 a month. However, that will take Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at least 11 years to repay their debt in full. That’s just too slow for those who believe Prince Harry and Meghan have been taking advantage of others for far too long.

Now, Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, a conservative Member of the British Parliament has said that “I’ve read all the facts of the case and clearly anyone who has borrowed taxpayers’ cash needs to pay it back as quickly as possible. £2.4 million is a lot of money and even if you paid back £250,000 a year it would still take a decade.”

Mr. Clifton-Brown went on in an interview with a British tabloid, saying, “If the figures associated with the Netflix deal are correct then there is a case for it being paid back over five years rather than more than 10.

These sorts of sums are out of the reach of the vast majority of people in this country who have been trying to make ends meet during the coronavirus crisis. While they may be sympathetic to Harry and Meghan’s situation, which is a delicate one, they will think that if the couple isn’t carrying out royal duties – and are making a lot of money in America, then they should start paying it back sooner.”

Other MPs Join In Calls For Prince Harry To Repay His Debt Now

Mr. Clifton-Brown wasn’t the only British lawmaker to demand that Harry and Meghan Markle pay everything back as soon as possible. A former member of the same committees on which Mr. Clifton-Brown sat, Bim Afolami, said, “If the Royal Family wants to subsidize Harry and Meghan that’s fine but the state should not pay for that. Now they are no longer working royals and living in California, there’s no justification for it. They need to pay the money back now.”

Indeed, the calls for Meghan and Prince Harry to pay things back are actually non-partisan. For instance, Former Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker said, “They (Prince Harry and Meghan Markle) should pay the taxpayer back immediately for Frogmore renovations rather than wait eleven years.

They can both definitely afford it. They should either pay it when the Netflix money arrives or give up the cottage.

“Even the monthly amount they have set is willfully inadequate. I don’t mind them having this deal with Netflix, good luck to them. But if they are going to do that then they have to make sure they are not benefiting from their royal status.”
