Culture clashes seem to have practically doomed Brittany and Yazan’s relationship from the very start, with the first sign being the big blowup in the airport parking lot over Brittany hugging some of the TLC crew members and Yazan spotting a bottle of vodka in her luggage. Later there was another big blowup between Brittany and Yazan’s parents.
Things have cooled down a little bit between Brittany and the parents, but she and Yazan still have plenty of problems. One major problem is that Brittany hasn’t come clean to Yazan about the fact that her divorce from her previous husband isn’t final. Now she wants to do some traveling without Yazan, and that may not be approved of in his orthodox Muslim culture, and could be the final straw that breaks the camel’s back.
Brittany met Yazan in an unusual way – she happened to walk into a room where Yazan was video chatting with his sister, who lived in the same building as Brittany’s sister, and they saw each other; and as the saying goes, it was love at first sight, at least according to Brittany! She was visiting her family in Chicago at the time, and their eyes locked through the computer screen.
In a sneak peek of the next episode, Brittany’s reasoning for leaving Jordan isn’t completely honest, and Yazan is obviously concerned about the trip. Brittany tells Yazan that she wants to travel back to the United States because she wants to be with her sister when she has her baby. To the TLC production crew, she says she’s not totally lying about her reasons, but just not telling him the full truth of why she wants to travel to Chicago.
The sneak peek then shows Brittany saying goodbye to Yazan and driving away in a car. She tells the TLC crew that she fears that her relationship may not succeed – she can tell that Yazan has some major doubts about their future and their relationship, and she admits that he has some valid reasons to feel that way. Scenes for upcoming episodes of the second half of the season which premieres in October show that things between the couple are not getting any better, and may in fact be getting worse.
Brittany is shown in a hotel room video chatting with Yazan, and he asks what he’s doing with her, and what she wants him to do – to which she answers, “Act right!” Then another shot shows her on a beach, discussing problems with him. He gives her an ultimatum which prompts her to give him an ultimatum, and she’s clearly angry with him and heads out on a plane – not to Jordan!
They are shown in person again, and Yazan gives her a warning – they have to be careful and she has to be careful. Yazan’s father is shown, saying that he will be Yazan’s murderer – and here we non-Muslims thought Sharia law only applied to women? Why else would his father be plotting Yazan’s murder? Then the two together are told by another person that there are other people out for Yazan’s blood!
