TLC’s “90 Day Fiancé-The Other Way” couple Kenny Niedermeier and Armando Rubio in Mexico hit yet another roadblock on the way to their happily ever after when they are denied a marriage license in the next episode.
TLC ’90 Day Fiancé Spoiler Insights
Armando tells People.com that he and Kenny had been talking about marriage for years. They are the first gay male couple on the “90 Day Fiancé” franchise. They want to get married and it is something they have dreamed of, even though they are cohabiting, along with Armando’s little girl Hannah. In the preview, Armando is shown in the civil registry office, which is where he has to apply for the marriage license.
Armando is prepared with all of the proper documentation required in order to obtain the license, but the clerk tells him, in Spanish, that they have to give them a negative answer – in other words, the answer is no! Armando is confused because he did all his homework ahead of time and confirmed that he read online that same-sex marriages are legal in Mexico.
But the clerk told him that in his and Kenny’s case, there is a different law that comes into play. She admitted that according to Mexico’s constitution the marriage would be legal, but they haven’t had the legislation to support reforming their codes-the codes that still say that same-sex marriage is not allowed! Kenny is heartbroken when Armando relays the news to him.
Armando Rubio And Kenny Niedermeier Talk About The Denial
Armando talks about how he did look it up online and it did say that gay marriage was legal in that state in Mexico. He doesn’t understand why the clerk denied the license, because everything she said seemed contradictory. Armando is really confused! Kenny says there weren’t even seven words spoken in the clerk’s office and there was no discussion – it was simply their protocol to deny same-sex couples a license to marry.
Armando and Kenny, as viewers will recall, met online through a gay father’s support group and hit it off right away. They fell in love online and Kenny made the decision to move from his home in Florida to Mexico, to start his life with Armando and his daughter Hannah. Since his move, they have endured rude homophobic slurs thrown at them during a meal outside a restaurant with Kenny’s daughters for one.
Armando had an awful time getting his family, and especially his father, to accept his coming out and especially to accept he was making a life with Kenny. He wasn’t even the one to come out to his parents, his wife, Hannah’s mother was the one to tell them, and she was later killed in an automobile accident. They did have an informal non-legal exchange of vows on a beach, attended by Kenny’s daughters. But the denial of a marriage license so that they can make their vows legal is a hurdle that they don’t know how to jump over!
