Viewers will recall that as a compromise for homesick Asuelu, the family took a trip to the Pacific Northwest – a much shorter, and safer, trip for their children Kennedy and Oliver than going to Samoa, where there was a measles outbreak at the time and one of the boys had been vaccinated but had a bad reaction, and the younger was too young for the vaccination.
This is where Asuelu’s mother, Lesina, and his half-sisters Tammy and Rosa live. Specifically, they went to the state of Washington, where after his mother said she didn’t care about the boys and only wanted Asuelu to financially support her and his half-sisters, because of Samoan custom, and a confrontation ensued between Kalani and one of the sisters and Asuelu and his mother, Asuelu still did not respond in the way that Kalani thought he should to the situation.
He cried; he told his mother if he supported her and his sisters then he couldn’t support Kennedy and Oliver, but did make a rather weak attempt at setting his mother and half-sisters straight. It came across as more of an excuse-making situation than a taking charge situation. Now, Kalani is so frustrated after coming back from that trip, she talks to her mother Lisa in a sneak peek of the upcoming episode “Hot Tempers and Cold Feet”, and says she doesn’t want to be married anymore!
Kalani talks to her mother first, and tells her it was insane – and the worst trip of her life! She tells Lisa that Asuelu just doesn’t seem to want to adjust to being an American father – his actions are more of a teenager in Samoa! Then Asuelu and Kalani are shown in their yard, sitting in a pair of chairs, and arguing. Kalani tells Asuelu that their problems are just getting bigger and bigger between them, and she doesn’t want them to affect the children.
She tells him that if things don’t change, the marriage is not going to work. She gives him an ultimatum – they see a therapist for marriage counseling. Asuelu balks at that, saying therapists are “all white and female” and he wants someone that understands him, another Samoan male who understands the Samoan culture.
Viewers may recall that he has another Samoan male who understands the Samoan culture who has been trying to help him – Kalani’s father Low, but since Low has assimilated into the American culture Asuelu doesn’t listen to him a lot! He hangs his head as Kalani walks off – he has wanted to stay in Washington with his mother and half-sisters even though his mother acts like she wants his money more than she wants him!
He didn’t support Kalani in the argument they all got into in Washington, and Kalani feels that he has been avoiding their issues, to the TLC producers. However, Asuelu wants to make it work – so they agree to start looking for a therapist because if he doesn’t, Kalani is done with him and he knows it!
