Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) is facing a tough battle on ‘The Young and the Restless’. His attempt to beat a rare blood disease again highlights Braeden’s acting chops.
As Y&R fans recall, Braeden’s efforts during last year’s storyline involving Thad Luckinbill (J.T. Hellstrom) ranked with both actor’s best. Some fans were sincerely concerned that Braeden was actually in ill health, due to his character’s on-screen physical appearance.
However, Braeden soothed everyone’s feelings by thanking them for the compliment. In fact, he was in good health (and remains so now). The point proven through those social media exchanges was that a great actor possesses the talent to deliver a believable image.
Braeden was projecting Victor’s response to J.T.’s attack at the Ranch through both men’s truly epic sequence that included a dazzling backward fall down the stairs by the ‘Moustache’. Victor later suffered a stroke, caused by J.T.’s intent to kill him off at Genoa City Memorial Hospital, and worked through a period of recovery.
Y&R is writing a different health angle for Braeden to play this time. Last year’s physical aspect is being followed by the side effects of the experimental treatments Dr. Nate Hastings (Sean Dominic) is administering to Victor.
Early views of Braeden’s performances, where Victor has just begun to mentally slip a bit, are proving to be excellent. Fans knew what to expect, with Nate having fully detailed to ‘Niktor’ what would likely happen after the treatments began. Yet, it’s fully compelling to see a master working his craft as the ‘Black Knight’ is thrown off course.
Marla Adams’ (Dina Mergeron) home run performances made her character’s Alzheimer’s issue memorable for the audience. The topical issue was also one that many viewers could relate, as their family members and friends are enduring, or endured that disease as well.
The arc Braden is playing, where the effects of the medicine are mind-altering, clearly projects as important as well.
Great storylines evoke strong emotion, while also being unpredictable. But Victor’s comeback last year doesn’t necessarily provide a preview now.
While Braeden has recently affirmed that he will remain a regular contract player indefinitely, this arc will surely take a different road that last year’s. So the issue isn’t whether Victor will beat the blood disease, but what will happen to the head of the Newman family as he fights. The vulnerability of this particular man hasn’t been explored in this particular way.
Nikki Newman’s (Melody Thomas Scott) full support, along with three of Victor’s children, will also, hopefully, eventually, include Adam Newman (Mark Grossman). Whether Newman Enterprises will be ripe for attack, by a known, or unknown enemy also remains to be seen.
