The recent turn back to the show’s legacy characters includes more screen time for one of the fan’s longtime favorite couples, Likey. Lauren and Michael Baldwin’s (Christian Le Blanc) relationship has endured, despite various bumps in the soapy road through the years.
As for Lauren’s friend, Phyllis, well, Red is back to being Red. The character’s turn feels like what it likely is. Tognoni is being given an interesting storyline to end her run, while also greasing the skids for the soon-to-be-returning Michelle Stafford (returning as Phyllis), who agreed to rejoin Y&R earlier this year.
Prior to the Stafford revival, Tognoni’s Phyllis is establishing a company, that appears to be based in China, that steals a Jabot logo. Ashley Abbott’s (Eileen Davidson) tell to her brother about the company actually wasn’t intended as a dig. She was purely letting him know that some type of unknown rival was targeting Jabot Collective, which is Jack’s counter to the idea Phyllis presented to him this spring.
In Phyllis’ mind Jack shouldn’t have rejected her pitch. She felt he’d be able to look beyond their recent, messy personal history to the heart of the business matter. But her two-time former husband remains leery. Phyllis sat unjustly, in Jack’s mind, in his Chief Executive Officer’s seat, just months ago.
Then, of course, there is the Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) issue. One of the main comparisons between Stafford’s and Tognoni’s editions is heartbreak. Phyllis wronged Jack by coupling with Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) during the Stafford era. During Tognoni’s reign, Phyllis took up with Billy.
So, Phyllis’ latest duplicitous act won’t come as a surprise to Jack. He’s familiar with her behavior patterns and knows that she has a particular bent against him. However, Lauren won’t be prepared for this type of betrayal. Fenmore’s remains Jabot’s partner. So Phyllis’ shady enterprise, if successful, could affect Lauren’s company’s profits.
Another issue might involve Michael’s assumed knowledge that Phyllis was working on some dirty deed. She recently asked him for advice about some clandestine issue. Lauren could easily react negatively when she learns that her husband became aware something nefarious was afoot and said nothing. No attorney-client privilege was in effect, so he wasn’t bound by a legal restraint to remain mum.
The Phyllis character works best as an agitator and sometimes, all-out trouble-maker. Y&R is writing hard toward that mark again. Kudos to Tognoni for the great work she’s done. This actor will be missed. At the same time it’s okay to look forward to Stafford’s coming return, as she is the original embodiment of this character.
